Making Your Cat Feel at Home

When you first bring your cat home there are a few things that you should consider.

Firstly determine in which areas you are happy for your cat to sleep, play and eat, and what areas are out of bounds to them. By providing your cat with designated areas, it will soon create good habits. Keep cupboard doors closed, and don’t leave food or beverage items where your cat may find them.

Useful Tips For Home

Below you will find useful tips for making your cat feel at home.

FEEDING AREA
Designate a feeding area for your cat. A tiled area such as a kitchen or laundry is ideal. If you have a dog, perhaps consider placing your cat’s food bowl on a bench or shelf where your cat can easily access it, however your dog cannot reach.

REST AREA
Your cat needs to feel safe where it sleeps. Many cats like a bed where they can curl up and hide. They prefer to sleep in areas that feel safe and warm.

PLAY AREA
A good spot for play is where the family congregates each day. The living room is the perfect place to keep your cat’s toys and scratchposts. It’s also the ideal place to sit and groom your cat. Keep in mind that cats enjoy leaping on the ledges and pounce at objects, therefore it’s recommended to keep valuable and breakable objects outof their reach.

LITTER AREA
A clean litter box is essential for good hygiene in your home. Use a quality litter and keep it scooped regularly. Wherever you decide to locate your cat’s litter box, keep it in the same location so that your cat always knows where to go.

INDOOR OR OUTDOOR CATS?
Some cat owners prefer to keep their cat indoors at all times. This is absolutely necessary for cat owners who live in apartments. It’s okayfor cats to remain indoors so long as they have items to entertain them throughout the day when you’re not at home. Cat flap doors are a great option for cat owners living at ground level. However keep in mind that the law requires all cats to be kept indoors overnight to protect ournative wildlife.
