Provide your pet with the nutritional building blocks for good joint health
Pets, like humans, are enjoying the benefits of advancements in medical and health treatments and living longer as a result. But, like us, cats and dogs also feel the pinch of old age.
Many of them may start to develop symptoms related to arthritis or similar conditions that cause inflammation and degeneration of the joints. This may affect one or several joints and generally becomes worse with age.
Often the presence of arthritis can be spotted by changes in your pet’s behaviour. Things to look for include: difficulty in getting out of bed, especially on cold mornings (we can all relate to that one.) General lameness, depression, lethargy and the loss of muscle mass. Some cats may find it difficult getting in and out of their litter box, resulting in an “accident” from time to time.
Whilst these symptoms can cause great discomfort, there are many ways we can help to make it easier for our four-legged friends.
If you’ve ever suffered from achy, creaky joints yourself, you may be familiar with glucosamine supplements. Glucosamine occurs naturally in the body, however its natural production slows with age. Many studies indicate that glucosamine supplements may be useful to promote joint health and mobility, by assisting the regeneration of cartilage tissue. This can alleviate some of the discomfort associated with joint degeneration. Although Glucosamine is a great supplement it does not cure Arthritis. So, if your pet suffers from Arthritis, consult your veterinarian for advise and treatments.
- Ensure your pet maintains a nice trim waistline. A leaner body shape will put less stress on their joints than a chunky physique.
- Controlled exercise is really important to maintain mobility and strength, but don’t let them over do it. Dogs suffering from arthritis may find swimming an effective form of exercise, due to its low impact on the body.
- Minimise your pets’ need to access stairs, chairs and furniture. This also includes your bed! Cat owners should try to make sure the litter tray is positioned in an easily accessible location, to eliminate the need for awkward climbing.
Follow these steps and feed your pet OPTIMUM® dry formula with added glucosamine to help your pet stay healthier longer and enjoy their later years to the full.
